RetroSpective: Ten to 2 - 25th Anniversary Reissue - EWI CD

RetroSpective: "Ten to 2"
25th Anniversary Reissue

A collection of original music featuring the first Akai EWI
Picture
As the title suggests, this is the 25th Anniversary (actually, the 26th... but who's counting?) reissue of the self produced and recorded, completely electronic EWI production entitled "Ten to 2", which I began in 1988 and completed in 1992.

It featured myself on the then newly distributed Akai EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) controller and synthesizer - as well as everything else - from which I eventually pressed 1000 CD copies.

The complete collection of the seven original tunes are presented here as high quality (320 kbps) mp3s, which are available for immediate download as a 120mb .zip file.

With the passage of time, regardless of what its stylistic label or commercial value might or might not be or have been, I feel that from an artistic, production and possibly historical standpoint, it's relevance as a creative entity justifies a renewal of its availability in the present.

In other words, I think it's definitely worth a listen!

                                                                              Some History

In 1986 when I first heard Michael Brecker’s famed recorded solo on “In a Sentimental Mood” with Steps Ahead, my reaction, like just about everyone else's, was “WTF is that?!” The back of the CD, as I recall, listed him as playing a “Steinerphone”.

A What?!

Shortbook of the Month: The Cycle -101

Shortbook™ of the Month: "The Cycle - 101"
A hundred & one thrilling trips around the Cycle of 5ths

Picture
Finally completed, this month's Shortbook™ is entitled "The Cycle - 101", both the subject and contents of which is "one hundred and one creative exercises & sequences, designed to transport you around the Cycle of Fifths" (Just like the well-bred gentledudes on the left).

The so called "Cycle (or Circle) of Fifths (or Fourths)" is one of the primary building blocks, melodically and harmonically, of what's become the basis of Western Music.

Derived from the natural harmonic series, the interval of a Fifth is the first  overtone, or partial, that occurs after the octave, (i.e. C - C - G......). The Fifth has been "instrumental", with the advent of equally tempered tuning, in forming the Western sense of pitch, and ultimately -  harmony.

A 'Trane Back@sswards - The Cycle of Ascending Major Thirds

A ‘Trane Back@sswards - The Cycle of Ascending Major Thirds

Picture
"Giant Steps, Giant Steps, Giant Steps"! How we love ya! As one of John Coltrane's best known originals, it's been an obstacle course as well as a right of passage for several generations of aspiring improvisers since its recorded inception in 1959.

Despite its notoriety, "Giant Steps" is but one of 9 known Coltrane originals in which he featured, in whole or in part, the Cycle of Descending Major 3rds, aka "Coltrane Changes ("Countdown", "Satellite" and "26-2" are some of the others).

Originally, 'Trane's intended use of this cycle was as a substitution for the more mundane ii-V7 harmonic movement as well as a device, which in his own words, "...would take me out of the ordinary path".

Since the Cycle of Major 3rds uses three key centers and divides the octave into 3 equal parts, regardless of direction (eg. B-G-Eb / descending or B-Eb-G / ascending), this poses a question: What's the difference in the quality and effect of a descending cycle (Coltrane Changes, aka Giant Steps Changes), as opposed to an ascending one?

To ponder this query, let's take a few giant steps back, so that we might get a more cosmic view of the larger picture. Shall we?

Joe Henderson's "Black Narcissus" - The Last Eight

Joe Henderson's
"Black Narcissus" - The Last Eight

Picture
Joe Henderson's "Black Narcissus" is a delicate jazz waltz and one of the legendary tenor saxophonist / composer's better known compositions.

Originally recorded on May 29, 1969 and released as part of Henderson's album "Power to the People" (which included Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Jack De Johnette) on the Milestone label, Joe recorded it several times subsequently. That includes the 1974 version, recorded in Paris and featured on the album of the same name.

It has since been covered by many by other artists.

Although completely different
in emotional intent, scope and style, "Black Narcissus" has striking similarities in compositional structure, as well as harmonic usage, to another one of Henderson's classics, and the subject of an earlier post; namely, "Inner Urge".

I had heard different versions of "Black Narcissus" for years before actually trying to learn it myself. At that point, I realized that this simple sounding tune necessitated some closer scrutiny; especially after hearing many improvisers trying to "ramrod" their way through the last eight measure, "B" section of the tune.

Chops Duster! - Fingerbuster!

Chops Duster! - Fingerbuster!

Picture"Hey look Ma......! It really works!!"
Contrary to the condition of the gent's digits in the picture below, this is a mild version of a "fingerbuster" (I'm not referring to the Jelly Roll Morton composition of the same name).

A "fingerbuster" could be considered as an instrumentalist's version of a "tongue-twister" which is usually defined as a group of words, or a phrase, that is considered to be difficult to execute.

While the degree of difficulty
varies with both the phrase and the ability of the practitioner, constant repetition, in any case,  at a slowed down tempo, usually serves to iron undo the knots before gradually bringing it back up to speed.

This particular "finger-twister" appeared out of the blue recently while I was doing my saxophonistic due diligence, and it gave me "the finger".

Three Flavors! - Mixo, MM & Aug ii-V7-I

This exercise comes in 3 flavors, and I don't mean your standard vanilla-chocolate-strawberry, either.

I'd even venture to claim, from my own biased point of view, that it's even more yummy, and certainly less fattening
.

It could even help you sweat off a few pounds in the process, plus it'll most definitely keep your cholesterol in check
..

Having gotten those preliminary points out of the way, what I'm really trying to say here is............

Square in the Circle, Part 2 - Diminished Scale 4ths, ii-V Application

2/11/2014

Picture
This somewhat Monkish, four bar line, is based on the premise of my previous post, which uses pairs of Perfect Fourths a tritone apart, as part of a Diminished Scale application.

This time, we can work it over a biii - bVI7 - ii  - V7 - i progression, which is most commonly found in the last four bars of a typical "Mr. PC" type Minor Blues.

The P4th pair from measure #1 (of line 1) represents one half of the C# (E, G, Bb) half tone / whole tone diminished scale,  while the P4th pair in measure #2 is half of the ht / wt diminished scale a half step below that, i.e. C (Eb, F#, A). It resolves neatly into a D tonic minor; D Melodic Minor being the scale of choice.

Front Burner! - More Penta b6 ii-V-i Apps

11/5/2013

Picture
Here's another Pentatonic b6 (Melodic Minor derivative) exercise, applied over a minor ii-V7-i, using a different MM scale, and therefore Penta b6, for each chord.

The basic pattern is a descending retrograde pentatonic b6 , in diatonic (to the pentatonic) thirds, with a simple scheme of:

Step Up / Skip Down - Step Up - Skip Down - Step Up - Skip Down - Step Up/

with the first 2 eighth notes of each Penta functioning as a pick up and anticipating the chord on beat one of the following measure.

Each pentatonic begins on the note closest to that of the first penta, which starts off the line.

Therefore, at least five of these lines (one for each pentatonic note position) can be generated from this pattern and it's interval scheme.  It will work with Penta b3 (it's ii mode: aka, In-Sen scale) and b2, or for that matter, any 5 note scale of your choosing.

As I mentioned in my last post, I really like the sound of the Penta b6, due to it's open, augmented quality, so, if you haven't noticed, it's been sitting on my front burner as of late.

Cool! Heat 'em up!
