Its intrinsic relationship with the interval of a Perfect 4th, as well as with the Pentatonic Scale, has also been noted.
So, to expand a bit on the topic, let's take a look here at a particular 4-note "pitch collection".
We'll combine a sus2 and sus4 and call it an 0257 tetrachord (C-D-F-G) - 'cause, well... that's what it is!
The notation graphic below (Ex. 1) illustrates a 4-bar sequence over a somewhat unconventional ii-bII7-V7-I chord sequence, which is really just a variation on a plain old ii-V7-I in C.
The melodic line consists of a repeating 4-note shape - the aforementioned 0257 - descending in minor 3rds for the first two bars, followed by an ascending half / whole step Diminished Scale (which is, as well, a collection of minor 3rds) for a bar-and-a-half, before resolving to the tonic on the final 2 beats of bar #4.
Ex. 1 - An 0257 shape in descending minor 3rds (bars #1 & 2) plus an ascending half-whole Diminished Scale (bars #3 & 4) over a ii-bII7-V7-I chord sequence.
The interval shape of the 0257 cell itself is Whole Step down - Perfect 4th down - Whole Step up. Separated by an ascending Whole Step, this pattern repeats 3 more times, resulting in each cell being a minor 3rd below the previous on.
The Whole Step distance between cells, including the h / w Diminished scale in bars #3 & 4, makes for a very smooth execution of this line as a whole.
The Free-B downloadable pdf has it in all 12 keys.
